Shore connection – what you need to know
Shore connection enables ships to turn off their diesel engines and connect to on-shore electric power.
Shore-based electricity then runs all onboard services required at berth.
Shore power connection on-board is conceived to reduce the environmental impact of ships at berth.
This technology is also able to increase the energy efficiency of these mooring ships.
To use power from the shore-based electricity grid, ships must be either built or retrofitted.
- ➡️ How long does it take to make a retrofit?
Ships can be safely retrofitted in a relatively short time while in operation or dry docking, without an interruption of operations.
The installation can be completed within 1 to 3 weeks per ship depending on the particular infrastructure of a ship. - ➡️Shore Power regulations:
The European Union Council adopted the alternative fuels infrastructure regulation (AFIR) which establishes, among other things, that maritime ports must provide shore-side electricity for vessels by 2030. - ➡️What is a turnkey Shore Power installation?
Thanks to our partnership we are able to offer a turnkey installation and commissioning of onboard shore power systems.
Our experienced and trusted in-house automation, installation and electrics teams are able to execute every single step of the installation process, including steel and cable works.
We take care of the whole “Cold Ironing” project, from beginning to end.
As an alternative we can offer shore power containerized system designed for high voltage shore connection, according to ‘IEC/IEEE/ISO 8005-1-2019: High Voltage Shore Connection Systems – General Requirements’.
ERMA FIRST BLUE CONNECT enables a vessel to shut down auxiliary engines during port stays.
Plugging into an onshore power source through BLUE CONNECT enables vessels to shut down their auxiliary engines, as it covers their energy demands while at berth
Green & Partnerships
We believe that the best way to help our customers to comply with the latest regulations is by specializing our technicians and signing important agreements with the best partners in the maritime industry.
